Boottochen Fuerteventura

3On Fuerteventura there are have many different options: from a day cruise along the coast, a Nautilus Surface Submarine or an excursion to Pozo Negro. There is something for everyone.

In the north at Corralejo you can book on a day trip to the small islet Isla Lobos. You can go by a glass bottom boats, catamaran, or by sailing boat. Most companies take bookings from outlets on Corralejo's busy harbour.

From the south, around Morro Jable in the Jandia region, there's an excellent choice of boat trips. Most of the catamaran sailing trips head down along the coast of Jandia for glorious views of Jandia's mountainous terrain, and crystal clear waters.

In the coastal waters of Fuerteventura boat trips can be taken to search for dolphins, whales and other large species, you will also often see sea turtles. As its position in the Atlantic is close to the Mediterranean and tropics, the sea life around the island is superb.

Botanische tuinen Fuerteventura

3The climatic conditions in Fuerteventura are ideal for the great variety of cacti and other succulents of the world.

Therefore you will find several botanic gardens in Fuerteventura, some of them are also combined with a zoo for that perfect day out.

Within these botanic gardens you will find many different species of Cacti, a large collection of palm trees and other tropical plants typical to the Island.

Duiken Canarische Eilanden

There is a lot of coastline (1491km) on the Canary Islands in proportion to the surface area. The geographic position of the Islands and the influence of the high pressure area over the Azores give the canaries a sunny and stable climate. There can be a great difference in weather between the north and south of each island due to the changes in altitude. With the exception of a few short storms, we have the ideal conditions for our favourite sport Scuba Diving.

The Canary Island waters are oceanic, benefiting from the Gulf Stream. This stream to a degree is what regulates the water temperature in these areas. This varies from a low of 19c in the winter and up to 25c in the summer. The further away from the African coast the cooler the water will become, for example the waters of El Hierro will be slightly cooler than of Lanzarote. These changes are an important factor as they affect the distribution of the marine species.

Although the Canary Islands are close to the African coast the waters here produce very little plankton, which makes them some of the clearest waters in the world, with visibility exceeding 30m at certain times of the year. Only in the spring you will find some vegetable plankton growth, this will only affect the visibility slightly.

In the Canary Islands you will find many different species depending on geographic position, water temperature, where the currents come from and also the composition of the sea bed. You will see both North Atlantic species (including tropical and sub tropical) and Mediterranean species, the ability to propagate has enabled them to establish themselves here. You can also find some Endemic species, found no where else in the world.

With the world ever changing we need to protect and conserve nature. With this in mind the Canary Islands have many marine reserves and more are being planned by the regional Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries for the future.

Taking all the above into account you could not ask for a better place to dive, with so many different species and so many different types of topography, caves, wrecks and shore dives you can dive a different place everyday.

Duiken Fuerteventura

This island, being part volcanic archipelago, has many superb dive sites to offer, they range from classic reef dives and wrecks, to fantastic underwater rock formations and drop offs. Fuerteventura has a large variety of marine life such as moray eels, barracudas, octopus and several different species of sea bream. The variety of sea life is endless.
The visibility ranges depending on the time of year; however you would expect a minimum of 20m or more. The water temperature ranges from 18ºC in the winter to 24°C in the summer. With these conditions in mind diving is ideal for everyone from a beginner to an advanced diver.

Eiland trips Fuerteventura

An organized trip is probably the easiest way to see the island, taking you to all the best spots. For these of you who wish to hire a car and venture out, all you need is a good map.

Whilst traveling around the island on the western side you can visit the ancient original capital, Betancuria. This is where the Guanches established their most important settlement; remains of this prehistoric civilization can be seen in the town's Archaeological Museum. Also this is an ideal place to sample some of the islands produce, including aloe Vera, honey rum and goats milk at one of the local farms. Betencuria Cathedral was built in 1410 and has some beautiful features including painted choir stalls made from Canarian pine wood. The Museum of Sacred Art contains some valuable religious art, gold and silverware.

Continuing north you will find the Mirador de Morro Velosa viewpoint where you can take in the fantastic views across the island's extraordinary landscape. Most of Fuerteventura consists of protected natural parks such as Corralejo Nature Reserve; in the north you will also find a large area of sand dunes, a lavascape and the volcanic cone of Montaña Roja. From Corralejo you have the chance to take a short boat ride to the islet Los Lobos to take in the many different species of plants.

In the south of the Island you will find Jandia, this is popular for camel Safari, also a visit to the zoo or a traditional Canarian lunch, the main focus being on fresh fish and local produce at traditional restaurants where you can try specialties such as braised baby goat, sancocho de pescado (a fish soup with sweet potato) and puchero Canario (a type of local stew with mixed meat and vegetables).

The ‘American star’ is well worth a visit on the remote west coast. This is a wreck on the beach of Playa de Garcy. The ship, once the pride of the United States maritime industry, was wrecked in a storm on its way to Thailand, now it has been converted into a floating hotel. The Cafeteria del Naufragio (Shipwreck Café) in Puerto del Rosario is completely fitted out with windows, doors, paneling and furniture from this once fantastic ship.

Paardrijden Fuerteventura

There are horse riding schools situated in the north and south of the Island, so where ever you stay on the island it’s accessible. This is something everyone can enjoy, whether you an experienced rider or trying it for the first time.

The weather does not vary a great deal throughout the year, however in the summer months the sun will be stronger and warmer so you need to make sure you have plenty of water and are protected from the sun. It very rarely rains in Fuerteventura, but in the winter months the wind can be cool, especially in the mountains, so a jacket would be ideal for those mountain walks.

For those more experienced wind surfers, the island provides varied conditions throughout the year so you can choose the best time of year and also the best spot.
